بندرعباس پس از اخراج پرتغالیها از جزیره هرمز در سال ۱۶۲۲ به دستور شاهعباس اول صفوی (با کمک نیروی دریایی انگلیس) نامگذاری و جایگزین بندر هرمز بهعنوان دروازه اصلی تجارت دریایی جنوب ایران شد؛ امروزه همراه با بندر شهید رجایی، بزرگترین مجتمع بندری ایران را تشکیل میدهد.
